Yes, the filter tag is another <start> and <end> style of Score Script tag, just like the replace tag.

The way to strip white space out of the user's given answer would be something like the following:
[:filter:no_whitespace:<start>:][:info:1:user_response:][:filter:<end>:]

You can replace the [:info:1:user_response:] with any Score Script tag or Score Script code/content depending on what exactly you want to do.

There is also the possibility to remove white space except for white space within HTML and Score Script tags:
[:filter:no_whitespace_outside_tags:<start>:][:info:1:user_response:][:filter:<end>:]
